Welcome to Hillsborough Science Olympiad!
Science Olympiad (or SciOly for short) is a science tournament in which students compete in pairs or trios to complete events testing a variety of science-based topics. The 23 events can be broken down into three general categories (with some exceptions): study, build, and hybrid. Study events include a written test of knowledge and/or laboratory tasks, which are scored for accuracy. Build events require a model/build to be constructed prior to the competition, which is then tested for its ability to perform a certain task. Hybrid events are a combination of the two!
Check out the 2023-2024 Rules Manual for more details on specific events.
We participate in several competitions throughout the season. At competitions, medals are awarded to the top six pairs/trios in each event, and trophies are awarded to the top six teams (determined by overall performance in all events).
The season typically runs from the start of school to mid-March. During this time, the high school team meets every Friday afternoon in room 633 from 2:30 PM to 4:15 PM, and the middle school team meets every Friday in room C8 from 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM. We spend most of our time preparing for competitions, but we also make new friendships and great memories throughout the year!
